Units of Study

Unit 1 – Personal Resilience (15 hours)

In this unit, students will explore the theme of personal resilience. Students will read advice on resilience and stories related to resilience before analyzing and writing about resilience in analytical and creative ways.

Weighting of summative work (subject to change): Unit 1 Resilience Assignment (7.78%), Unit 1 Personal Essay (7.78%)

Unit 2 – Shakespeare (35 hours)

In this unit, students will read and analyze Hamlet by William Shakespeare. Students will relate the themes of Shakespeare to their own lives and current events in society.

Weighting of summative work (subject to change): Unit 2 Hamlet Acts 1-2 Assignment (7.78%), Unit 2 Hamlet Act 3 Assignment (7.78%), Unit 2 Hamlet Acts 4-5 Assignment (7.78%)

Unit 3 – Poetry and Song (15 hours)

In this unit, students will read and analyze a variety of fictional short stories, monologues, plays, and poems. Students will also creatively write their own short stories, plays, and poems.

Weighting of summative work (subject to change): Unit 3 Poetry and Song Assignment (7.78%)

Unit 4 – Literary Lenses (15 hours)

In this unit, students will read a variety of short stories and analyze them using different literary lenses (such as reader-response, historical/biographical, psychological, gender, socio-economic, and archetypal).

Weighting of summative work (subject to change): Unit 4 Literary Lenses Assignment (7.78%)

Unit 5 – Novel and Final Tasks (30 hours)

In this unit, students will read and analyze the novel Hat Trick by Jacqueline Guest. Students will relate the themes of the novel to their own lives and current events in society.

Weighting of summative work (subject to change): Unit 5 Hat Trick Part 1 Assignment (7.78%), Unit 5 Hat Trick Part 2 Assignment (7.78%)

End-of-Course Tasks: ISU Assignment (10.00%), Final Exam (20.00%)
