About Course

English as a Second Language, All grades in high school

This course extends students’ literacy skills and ability to apply learning strategies effectively, and teaches them how to use community resources to enhance lifelong learning. Students will communicate with increased accuracy and fluency for a variety of academic and everyday purposes; perform a variety of guided reading, writing, and viewing tasks; and use media and community resources to complete guided-research projects. This course further develops the critical thinking skills students will need to participate in Canadian society as informed citizens.

Course Outline

UNIT 1 – Listening and Language
Overview: In this unit, students will develop strategies for improved listening, speaking and vocabulary. With a focus on grammar, students will improve their oral and written communication.

UNIT 2 – Speaking and Writing
Overview: In this unit, students will develop strategies for improved speaking, vocabulary and writing. With a focus on grammar, students will improve their oral and written communication.

UNIT 3- Short Fiction and Reading Comprehension
Overview: In this unit, students will analyze and identify narrative elements and literary devices such as plot, setting, mood, tone and many more. Students will read a variety of texts from different cultures and time periods. Students will work on reading comprehension skills and paragraph writing using the Point, Proof, Analysis model.

UNIT 4 – Shakespeare – A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Overview: In this unit, students will explore the life and times of William Shakespeare. They will examine plot, themes, motifs, symbols and major characters of one of Shakespeare’s most romantic comedies. Students will become familiar with the structure of a Shakespearean play, vocabulary, and key themes.

UNIT 5 – Culminating Final Assignment
Overview: In this unit, students will demonstrate a culmination of learning through a written task. This task is the culmination of all that they have learned. It is also an important task to be mastered for the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test.

UNIT 6 – Final Exam
